Workshop 2 – The Deets

A few reminders and tips to help you get the most out of the workshop:

  • bring a laptop if you have one, we have wifi and can answer your questions in real time
  • we have a new location: Zambaleta (19th & Florida in the Mission)
  • we have a “hard start” and a “hard stop” which means we start at exactly 7pm and wrap right at 8:30. We will provide you with information for schmoozing after the workshop, if you are interested

We will cover many services, but the first 45 minutes will focus on:

Because of demand, there will be three options to choose from for the first 45 minutes. Then the entire group will convene for group discussion and questions for the final 45 minutes.

Workshop 2: Syllabus

ROOM 1: 45 minutes: Case Studies & Paypal
review 3 case studies where artists/ bands are succesfully reaching potential fans with social networks and social media and take an in depth look at why it is working, and how this can apply to musicians and promoters. The last 15 minutes will cover how to set up PayPal and other “donation” systems on your website, and why this is a good idea.

ROOM 2: 45 minutes: Facebook/ Twitter Questions & Answers
Got questions about Facebook, Twitter,  Tumblr another Social Network or Blog software? Come to this room and ask all your questions without judgement, get real answers. Use wifi for real time adjustments.

Room 3: 45 minutes: WordPress & Tumblr
get wordpress answers from an experienced developer. Learn to use Tumblr to your greatest advantage

Social Media & Social Networks: reaching potential fans, and everything you ever wanted to vent about social networks and social media
we will review the very bottom half of the fan pyramid and talk about how to reach potential fans with a new form of media and connectivity, and the results you can expect.

We’ve grown in size already, and partnered with a music school. To improve on sound bleed, chair access, wifi and the need for a classoom-like atmosphere, we’ve partnered with  Zambaleta – a new music & dance school in the mission.  Welcome to SF, Zambaleta! Thanks for the classrooms!

What is Zambaleta?

Zambaleta is a nonprofit community world music and dance school based in San Francisco’s Mission District. They offer music and dance classes, hullabaloos, hootenannies, and other musical encounters that lift the human spirit and create community.  Look soon for Tango, Flamenco classes and beyond from Zambaleta. Many thanks to  Zambaleta for embracing our idea and recognizing the need for artist and promoter assistance and education in an increasingly digitally integrated environment.

Tips & Tricks: How to set up “pay what you choose” structures on your website or invitations, more facebook & twitter answers to your questions, maximizing google & facebook.

  • learn to define milestones & metadata vital to the discover-ability of your music
  • learn how online social networks & media can increase the discoverability of your art & why it matters
  • Discuss reasons you do or do not enjoy using social media with other artists in a guided session, what is easy, what is not, and any time constraints

Why is this our focus?

The title might sound a little cliche, but after Workshop #1, many attendees took a survey. Based on a generous amount of feedback via email, the survey and in-person conversation, we discovered that you walked away learning more about how to use Twitter / Facebook. At the end of Workshop 1, we finished with a lecture about how to encourage and enable Potential Fans to spend just $2/ year. Silence filled the room when I asked everyone for ways they have convinced a fan to spend just $2. Your feedback reacted to this discussion and you indicated a desire to focus on the potential fans before the passive fans. One attendee wrote:

“how can I cut through the noise to even reach a potential fan before I can ask for two bucks?”

Good question!  You spoke up, we listened. In Workshop 2, we will learn more social network & media tips, but more importantly we will explore how to cut through the noise,  the problems you do or do not encounter along the way (including “I don’t have time”) and  how to optimize your discoverability with methods that integrate online and offline music promotions.

Q: Will there be wifi for everyone?
A: Yes!
